(Gelatin silver print, synthetic urushi, gold brass powder | RC paper)
Introduction /
Using sunlight as a primordial energy, this series fixes the accumulation of time onto photographic paper. Concentrated light burns the surface, causing chemical transformations in silver and gelatin through which color and image emerge. Sunlight, as “light in combustion,” inscribes the present moment, while photograms and negatives carry traces of past light. Their overlap forms a stratified record of time.
「Solaris Lux」
「Solaris Lux」
Past Light, Burning Light, and a World in Circulation
“Solaris Lux” is a series in which photographic paper is scorched by sunlight, allowing lights from different moments in time to intersect upon a single surface.
The images revealed through photograms and negatives are traces of “past light” — light that has already passed. In contrast, concentrated sunlight acts directly upon the photographic paper as “light that is burning in the present moment.”
A closed darkroom space and the external energy of sunlight, past light and present light, recording and combustion — as these opposing elements move back and forth through one another, the work emerges not as a fixed image, but as a site where layers of time continuously overlap.
These works are created without the use of ink or paint. Instead, the photographic paper is physically scorched by sunlight itself, producing color through chemical reactions. Materials such as synthetic urushi lacquer and imitation gold powder are also incorporated into the works. The imitation gold powder is not used as pigment, but as a symbol of an eternal “light” beyond the cycle of reincarnation. This material, too, continues to change over time.
The traces burned into the surface by light resemble the gradual transformations of plants and minerals over long periods of time. Every image undergoes irreversible change and can never return to the same form again.
By intersecting lights from different moments in time, “Solaris Lux” visualizes, through light itself, a world that exists in continuous circulation.
